HENRY REPEATS FOR SECOND WIN

April 19, 2014 - Even with cloudy skies and rainny weather threatening racing all around east Tennessee, the ever faithful Tazewell Speedway fans and drivers witnessed a night of thrills,spills and hot tempers.
Josh Henry of Newport set fast time in Tazewell Late Models with a lap of 12.025 seconds. Dakotah Knuckles, in only his second start in a late model, would qualify second and share the front row of the feature with Henry. With the drop of the green Henry shot into the lead and by lap seven had almost a full straightaway advantage over Knuckles. Contact between Brian Shockley and Craig Gregg would bring out the caution on lap thirteen. On the restart Steve Smith started pressuring Knuckles for the second spot. Knuckles held off Smith until lap twenty-one when he dropped pitside with a flat tire. Up front it was all Josh Henry in the Henry Trucking, Total Control Shocks and Suspension sponsored Rocket Race Car picking up his second Tazewell Late Model feature of the season.

The wildest action of the evening came courtesy of the Sportsman feature. Clyde Overholt of Tazewell would set the fastest time among seventeen entries with a lap of 12.309 seconds. Overholt would draw a three in the invert draw wihich would put Sneedville's Jordon Horton and Harrogate's Anthony Burchett on the front row. Horton would shove his way into the lead followed closely by Burchett and Overholt. Before completing lap number two Jacob Owens would bring out the caution. On the restart Burchett would spin on his own in turn two as he was pursuing Horton. Rex Coffey of Morristown would slam the outside wall in turn four on the restart ending his night. The most frightening moment of the night came on lap four as Dustin Hoover made contact with the car of Jeff Day coming out of turn four. The contact sent Day's car sideways and up into the front stretch catch fence. After a couple of violent tumbles the car came to rest on it's top. With the crowd in stunned silence resque squads members quickly attented to Day who emerged under his own power. He would be sent to a local hospital for evaluation. Horton would go on to lead every lap of the feature and score two in a row in the River Place on the Clinch, Brabston Trucking and Excavating, Discount Parts City, Greasy Rock Auto Shop sponsored Warrior Chevrolet SS.

Last year's points champion Robbie Buchanan would set quick time in Modified Street and line up beside Dakotah Knuckles on the front row of the feature. Knuckles, in only his second year of competition, was still looking for his first win after bouts of bad luck last season. After the field took the green and stormed into turn one Justin James would make contact with last week's winner Tony Horton. The wreck would end Horton's night with heavy left side damage. Tempers quickly flared between the crews of both drivers with Horton quickly showing his displeasure. As the tensions died down Knuckles and Buchanan would out on a show as they duked it out on the track. Knuckles would fight off the challenge to score his first ever win in the Jovida Enterprises, Patty's Neighborhood Market, Hickory Star Resort & Marina, Phillips Excavating, Eagle Racing Engines powered Chevy Monte Carlo.

Kevin Smith of Barbourville, KY would dominate the Pure Street feature after drawing the outside pole and win in his first start of the season.

Last week's winner Matt Tharp of Luttrell would draw the pole for the Classic Car feature with Eli Keck starting on the outside of the front row. Tharp would take the early lead followed by Keck, Justin Overton, Josh Chesney and Phillip Thompson. The first caution came on lap three as Chesney's right rear tire went sailing over the turn three wall. On the restart Keck had his hands full holding off Thompson and Overton for second. Keck would take himself out of contention as he spun on lap eleven. On lap twelve Thompson started putting the heat on Tharp for the lead. The duo raced side by side for a couple of laps until Thompson took the lead in turn three on lap fifteen. Tharp would tag the outside wall in turn four ending his night. Thompson would hold on for his third win of the season in the Skyline Transportation, Filmax Filtration Systems, Logistic Detailers and Flynn Carpet Service Classic Car.

Chuck McMahan of Newport picked up his second 4 Cylinder feature win in the Round Boy Motorsports, Lowes Auto Parts Ford Mustang.
