Ogle cashes in another win

Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn. overtook his team-mate and car owner Stacy Boles on the eleventh lap and went on to capture his second career Old Man’s Garage Spring Nationals Series victory at the Tazewell Speedway on Saturday Night.

Boles, who pulled out on the tenth circuit with mechanical problems, led the first ten laps of the 50-lapper with Ogle running in the second spot, but after misfortune for Boles, Ogle took the point and led the remaining distance while driving the Advanced Motorsports, Advanced Transportation, Keyser Manufacturing, West Haven Speed Equipment, Competition Racing Equipment, Outlaw Graphics, Brucebilt Performance sponsored Vic Hill Racing Engines-powered Rocket Chassis to the $6,000 payday.

The win for Ogle was his second-straight at the 1/3 mile high-banked oval as he also captured the $10,000 WoO LMS “Ray Varner Ford 50” win on April 11th.

In preliminary action, Donald McIntosh blistered the Tazewell Speedway with an 11.178 second lap in FK Rod Ends Time Trials. Stacy Boles took the Dash win while Chris Madden and David Payne took the Heat Race victories.

Brad Davis of Tazewell made it two in a row winning the KDRA Super Stock feature in the Jeffers Exterminating, Tires Etc, Andrews Construction, Soul Bleeds, Southern Outdoors, Little Caesars Pizza, A-1 Tint & Graphics, Phantom Race Engines, Rainmaker race Car.

Second generation driver Clyde Overholt of Tazewell established a new Sportsman qualifying record with a lap 0f 12.078 seconds. Overholt would draw the pole in the invert draw sharing the front row of the feature with Anthony Burchett of Harrogate. At the drop of the green Overholt took charge leaving Burchett and Matt Tharp of Luttrell to scuffle for second. Burchett would take himself out of the equation as he spun on his own on lap seven bringing out the yellow. On the resstart Tharp used the low groove to challenge for the lead. Bringing the crowd to their feet Overholt and Tharp raced side by side for several laps of hard yet clean racing. Overholt would hold off Tharp for his second win of the season in the Petty’s Wrecker Service, Noah’s Wholesale, Baker’s Tree Service, Eagle Race Engines powered Rayburn Race Car.

In the make-up Sportsman feature from last week's rainout Clyde Overholt would once again line up alongside Anthony Burchett. This time around Burchett would flex his muscles and take the early lead followed by Overholt and Philip Thompson of Knoxville. Thompson would tag the turn two wall on lap two sliding him back to fourth. Up front Burchett was distancing himself from Overholt by over six car lengths. Bad luck would strike Burchett on lap ten as he cut down a right rear tire giving the lead over to Overholt who lead the rest of the way.

Philip Thompson of Knoxville was a busy man on Saturday night doing quadruple duty driving in both the Sportsman and Classic Cars features. Thopmson would set fast time in Classic Car quailfying for the first feature with John Stevens of Wallins Creek, KY starting second. Thompson and Stevens battled door to door in the early laps. The scariest moment of the night came on lap eight when the car of Jason Beeler of Luttrel barrel rolled down the front strecth after making contact with Richie Overholser. Beeler would walk away uninjured from the incident. Thompson would go unchallenged for the win in the Skyline Transportation, Filmax Filtration, Hooker Harness, Wells Racing Photography, Crockett Creek Beef Jerky sponsored Classic Car with power from an Eagle Racing Engine.

Thompson would keep the momentum going in the make-up feature even after being relegated to the second row after two failed starts. Shoving his car into the lead Thompson would lead every lap of the feature for his third win in a row.
