Michael Courtney claims UCRA win

For the second time this season the United Championship Racing Alliance visited the ultra-high banks of Tazewell Speedway for the $3,000 to win Bad Fast Taz 50.

Twenty-three Crate Late Models from all around the region signed in with Clinton's Anthony White earning the pole position for the main event. Current UCRA Rookie points leader Michael Courtney of Knoxville would share the front row with White.
From the opening lap White would take charge, leading every lap of an exciting feature with furious racing throughout the field. Courtney worked hard to stay withing striking distance of the leader while fighting off last week's Sportsman feature winner Aaron Guinn of Russellville.

Moments after emerging from his car in Victory Lane White was informed that Courtney had protested the engine of White's car. After refusing to tear down the engine White would forfeit the win. Michael Courtney was awarded his first UCRA feature victory in the PPM Racing Products, White Star Market & Deli, A&M Building and Contracting, Big Momma's Concrete, Rock Solid Poured Walls, Harrison Concrete, Tennessee Valley Builders, Keith Delong Construction, AAA Welding and Fabricating, Mighty Muffler, West Haven Speed Equipment sponsored CVR Race Car.Current UCRA points leader Jimmy Elliot of Cleveland would work his way from the twelvth starting spot to finish eighth. Last week's Sportsman feature winner Aaron Guinn of Russellville would finish second. Former Pure Street and Sportsman standout Jonathan Miracle of Tazewell would finish sixth after spending the early laps of the feature in the top five.

Sportsman Late Models were also in the spotlight for an $800 to win feature. Second-generation driver Matthew Smith of Barbourville, KY was quickest in time trials with a lap of 12.385 seconds. Current points leader Travis Fultz of Harrogate qualified second piloting a car owned by James Parrott.

With the flash of the green flag Smith and Fultz drag raced down the front stretch into the first two turns. The duo would trade paint fighting for position coming out of turn two with Smith's car getting sideways. Smith would straighten it out to lead the first lap trailed by Fultz, Tazewell's Odie Overholt, Jason Sizemore of Sneedville and Warren McMahan of Dandridge.

Using the low line Smith while Fultz used the middle groove the pair would start widening a gap over the rest of the field. Smith would hit his marks and weave through the lap traffic to score his first career win piloting the Smith's Gutters & Siding, Hair Essentials Family Salon, David's Auto & RV Repair, Smith's Sealing sponsored Pierce Race Car powered by a DJ's Performance Race Engine.

A strong contingent of 4 Cylinder drivers were on hand to do battle in a $500 to win feature. Derik Duggan of Knoxville was fastest in time trials yet would pull a three on the invert draw. The draw would give Bybee's Randy Dyke the pole starting position alongside Joey Allen of Cosby.

From the opening laps Allen quickly showed the field that he had the car to beat. By the seventh lap Allen had pulled out to a seven car length lead over second place Duggan. By lap fourteen the gap was widened to a full straight. With five laps to go Allen would make contact with Rufus Collett while trying to put him a lap down. Collett would spin from the contact and be charged with the caution.

With the field reset and bunched up for the restart Duggan would begin a challenge for the lead. The veteran drivers would race door-to-door while the final laps for several laps with Allen taking the lead for good with three laps to go. Duggan would retire from the event after slowing on the back stretch. Allen notched his second win of the season in the Allen's Railroad Contracting, Norton's Body Shop, New Vision Graphics sponsored Ford Mustang.

Two-time Classic Car champion and current points leader John Stevens of Wallins Creek, KY held off a hard charging Hayston Collett to notch hi seventh win of the season in the Hensley Trucking, The Parts House, State Farm Insurance, Hensley Logging, Wallace Auto Sales, Hensley Grocery, Anna Mae Vapors, Red Eye Racing, Autism Awareness sponsored Classic Car with power from and Eagle Race Engine.
