Trammell grabs win on Fan Appreciation Night
Sunny skies, 25 cent Cokes and a packed crowd made for a very successful Fan Appreciation Night at Tazewell Speedway on Saturday night. Those on hand witnessed some fan favorites return to Victory Lane and a second generation driver earn his first career win.
Before the racing action got underway the Mid Season Points Champions were honored in Victory Lane. Receiving trophies were:
Limited Late Model- Brian Shockley
Sportsman- James Parrott
Modified Street- David Clark
Classic Car- Quincy Arnwine
4 Cylinder- Hayston Collett
Street Stock- Brad Sturgill
Limited Late Models were in the spotlight on a thirty lap feature. Third generation pedal smasher Jason Trammel of Knoxville was quickest among the competitors with a lap of 11.921 seconds with Greg Estes of Jonesville, VA recording the second quickest time. Trammell would pull a four on the invert draw giving Tazewell's Clyde Overholt the pole starting spot. By virtue of the draw Brian Shockley of Thorn Hill was slated to start on the front alongside Overholt yet Shockley decided to start on the tail of the field after developing engine trouble. This would put Trammell on the outside of the front row for the feature.
With the drop of the green Trammell quickly took the lead as Overholt, Michael Rutherford and Estes fell into queue. On the second lap Estes shot low in turn turn to take third away from Rutherford. On the opposite end of the speedway Estes again used the low line to muscle his way past Overholt for second.
The scariest moment of the night came on lap five. Shockley's engine went up in smoke down the back stretch and as he pulled pit side a fire erupted under the hood. The fire was quickly extinguished and Shockley walked away uninjured. On the restart Trammell set sail and began pulling away from Estes. Meanwhile Overholt and Rutherford were putting on a good battle for third. With seven laps to go Estes would bring out the final caution with a flat right rear tire. Trammell would go flag-to-flag for his second win of the season piloting the Vic Hill Racing Engine powered, Brucebilt Performance, Charlie Brown Co. In Sportsman action Matthew Smith of Barbourville, KY set the quickest time in qualifying yet would slam the outside wall in turn two on the cool down lap, causing enough damage to end his night. James Parrott of Rutledge and Tazewell's Odie Overholt would make up the front row of the twenty lap feature.
Bringing the field to the green flag Parrott ans Overholt would drag race down the front stretch. As they went into turn two Parrott's car got loose and drifted up straight into Overholt's path. The ensuing contact sent both cars spinning and cause race ending damage. After the track was cleared Jerry Boling and Mitchell Burke would move up to the front row.
Using the outside line Burke would shoot into the lead on the ensuing restart. Behind him Boling and Roger England would battle for second. Using his seven years of racing experience and the advice from his dad, former Bomber champion Larry "Goat Man" Burke, the young driver seized the opportunity to show off his talent. Perhaps saving the best action of the night for the last feature Sharps Chapel's James Weaver and Wise, VA's Jamie Whitt put on a show of hard racing and sportsmanship. Last week's winner Donovan Long of Morristown was fastest in time trials and would take the early lead of the twenty lap feature.
I'm the early laps Long was able to put some distance on the rest of the field. Behind him Weaver and Logan Cobb battles door to door for second. Bad luck would strike Long on lap eight as he ran over a back bumper deposited by Colby Werner and cut down both right side tires. The damage would cause Long's car to ride the the outside wall in turns one and two and get the car up on two wheels. During the caution Long's crew went to work to get him back on the track and not lose any laps. He would fight back to finish fourth.
On the ensuing restart Weaver inherited the lead as Whitt stayed in his tracks. Just past the halfway point Weaver's car began a horrible push that kept him busy wrestling the steering wheel. This would allow Whitt to close onto Weaver's back bumper. In the closing laps Whitt pestered Weaver for the lead, moving into the inside line several times looking for an opening. With two laps to go Weaver's car pushed up into the turn two outside wall and came down right into the side of Whitt's car. Whitt was able to keep control and lead the final two circuits for the exciting win in the Baldwin Filters, B&D Repair sponsored Iron Horse Race car.
