Josh Collins makes it 2 out of 3

Coming into the night Josh Collins was tied with Josh Fields in the Crate Late Model championship points chase. Luck looked to be on Collins’ side as he was quickest in qualifying with a lap of 12.283 seconds and drew the one on the invert. Bringing the field to the green for the thirty lap feature, Collins and last week’s winner Brian Smith would storm into turn one with Collins taking the point down the back chute. Behind him Smith and Fields would joust for the second spot. Collins would lead flag to flag for his second win of the season behind the wheel of the Knoxville Diesel, Compass Heating & Air, Evergreen Design & Construction, A-Plus Electric, Shorty’s Shock Service, Gutter Busters, Matlock Decal, Bodies by Skinny sponsored Rocket XR-1 Race Car.

A very stout field of Sportsman was on hand with second-generation pedal smasher Jod Horton recording the fastest lap in qualifying of 12.414 seconds. This would put Horton on the pole for the twenty lap dash alongside Jerry Boling. With the wave of the green flag Horton quickly took control as Boling, Troy Eads, Robbie Buchanan and Odie Overholt gave chase. By the fifth lap Horton had caught the tail end of the field and began putting cars a lap in arrears. Two laps later Overholt and Eads were battling door to door for the third spot. By the midway point Eads was hounding Boling for second yet Eads would fade back through the field to finish sixth.

Up front it was Horton using the years of experience on the high banks to slice and dice his way through the lap traffic and score his third win of the year piloting the Presley’s Sawmill, Sneedville Motor Company, Greasy Rock Auto Shop, The Tennessee Termite, Smoky Mountain Home Health & Hospice, Clinch River Market & Deli sponsored Warrior Race Car.

In the always exciting Classic Car action, Kevin Crane would post the quickest lap in time trials and draw the two on the invert. This would put last week’s winner, Josh Chesney, on the pole for the twenty lap event. Using the momentum from a week ago, Chesney would take the lead in the first turn with Crane right on his heels. By the fifth lap the pair had begun to pull away from the rest of field. Chesney would hold off Crane and score his second win in a row and fourth overall win of the season.

Austin Lefevers would turn the fastest lap in Street Stock qualifying and draw the two on the invert, starting alongside Jamie Whitt for the twenty lap feature. Lefevers took the lead as Whitt, Logan Cobb and Tony Trent battled three-wide down the back stretch. The top five would race almost nose-to-tail for most of the race. Leading every lap, Lefevers would earn his second win in a row and third overall win driving the S&H Services, Screen Designs by Sheila, Garretson’s, McBride Security sponsored Monte Carlo.

For the second week in a row Hayston Collett was relegated to starting no better than fifth after picking up his sixth 4 Cylinder feature win in a row last Saturday night. Former track champion Chuck McMahan was quickest in qualifying and would start on the pole alongside current points leader Chad Manning. With the flash of the green McMahan and Manning drag raced down the front chute with McMahan taking the point going down the back stretch. Behind them Rookie Josh Cody and Samuel Fox battled for position. By the second lap Collett had clawed his way past Fox for the third spot. On the next lap Collett pulled even with Manning and would take over second.

By the fifth lap Collett began chasing down the leader McMahan. Three laps later Collett would catch McMahan and muscle his way into the lead in turn three. Just as this happened the caution flag would fly as Cody and Fox would make contact and spin in turn two. During the caution period Collett would pull off of the speedway with engine woes and give up the lead. On the restart it looked like McMahan was on his way to score his first win of the season. With three laps to go McMahan ‘s engine would give up the ghost and spew oil down the front stretch and into turn one. After the track was cleaned up Manning would inherit the lead and notch his first win of the season driving the Dyke’s Body Shop, CTR sponsored Ford Mustang.
