Chris Madden cruises to Lil Bill Corum victory

The Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Southern Series and the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals would co-sanction the 2nd Annual Lil’ Bill Corum Memorial on Saturday evening at Tazewell Speedway in Tazewell, TN and Chris Madden of Gray Court, SC would lead all 75 laps and drive to the win in the $21,000 to win event.

The win by the 46-year-old would be his fourth career Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series victory and third of the 2022 racing season. Madden’s winning effort would come aboard a Rocket Chassis powered by a Durham Race Engine with sponsorship from Drydene Engine Oils, Drydene Racing Formulas, Henderson Amusements, Millwood Plumbing, Franklin Enterprises, Davis Diesel Service, Worley Monument, Pyramid Materials, VP Racing Fuels, and Penske Racing Shocks.

Chris Madden would take the lead at the start of the 75-lap main event, with Brandon Overton, Ricky Weiss, Jimmy Owens, and Ross Bailes in pursuit. The front five would remain the same as Madden would begin to catch slower traffic, allowing Overton to close in on two separate occasions.
The first caution of the race appeared on lap fifteen when Michael Chilton slowed on the frontchute with a flat tire, but would return to action. Madden would control the restart, with Weiss taking second from Overton and Bailes would take fourth from Owens. But the caution would appear again one lap later on lap sixteen when Ryan King’s mount would have a fire in the engine compartment in turn one and would be done for the event.
The front five would remain the same on this restart, with Madden scooting away a bit from Weiss by lap twenty-five. But Madden would catch the rear of the field one circuit later and Weiss would begin to reel the race leader back to him. Problems for fifth place running Owens would show on lap twenty-nine, as Owens would slow on the track, go to the work area, and return momentarily. This restart would see Madden get a great launch into turn one, while Overton would reclaim the second spot from Weiss, while Dale McDowell would sneak fourth away from Bailes. The front five would remain the same until lap forty-five when fifth place Bailes would slow on the track.
Madden would lead again as the green flag was displayed, with Weiss taking second from Overton, 12th place starter Dakotah Knuckles would snag fourth from McDowell. McDowell would reclaim the fourth spot once again on lap forty-eight, while Scott Bloomquist would take fifth from Knuckles one tour around the track later. Madden would maintain a comfortable lead over Weiss, while Overton continued this pair until Overton would draw the final caution on lap seventy-three after slowing on the frontchute. Madden would lead the charge on the restart and would not be challenged in the closing laps of the event to lay claim to the $21,000 top prize and victory. Weiss would take runner-up honors, with McDowell would settle for third. Bloomquist and Knuckles completed the top five. The remainder of the top ten would be Kyle Strickler, Bailes, 22nd starting Jonathan Davenport, 24th starting Christian Hanger, and 19th place starter David Payne.

A stellar field of Sportsman Late Models were on hand to vie for $1,021 to win. Former track champion Travis Fultz of Harrogate was quickest among the twenty-two entries with a lap of 11.940 seconds. Fultz would pull the two on the invert draw which would put last year’s point champion Odie Overholt of Tazewell on the pole for the twenty lap feature. With the drop of the green flag Fultz would use the outside groove to take the lead in turn two as Overholt and Sevierville’s Heath Alvey gave chase. The caution flag would fly on lap three as Jerry Boling spun on his own. As the cars were slowing down Overholt’s engine started smoking, ending his night. This would move Alvey to second and Sneedville’s Jody Horton into third.

On the restart Alvey started his challenge for the lead. On lap eleven Alvey would use a clean slide job in turn two to wrestle the lead away from Fultz. Leading the rest of the way Alvey notched his first win at Tazewell Speedway since May of 2014 piloting the Stinnett Chevrolet, Dark Star Diesel Performance, Diversified Screens and Enclosures, Sammy’s Auto Parts sponsored Victory Chassis.
