Dale McDowell opportunistic in taking Southern Nationals win
Dale McDowell took advantage of a couple of opportunities to win Saturday's Schaeffer's Oil Southern Nationals finale. Dakotah Knuckles led the first 40 of the 53 laps. Knuckles tangled with the slower car of John Henderson that ended his night. McDowell assumed the lead with Mack McCarter in second. On lap 45, several cars got together in turn 4 and McDowell got a piece of the altercation. McDowell was able to keep his spot as the leader. McCarter and Weiss waged a tough battle for second in the closing laps and McDowell held on for the win. Cory Hedgecock overcame a flat tire to finish 11th and win the 2022 Southern Nationals championship over Will Roland.
Other winners were Jody Horton, John Stevens, Zach Campbell, and Hayston Collett.
