Dale McDowell turned in another dominating performance by winning Sunday’s Southern Nationals finale presented by Ray Varner Ford. McDowell made a last lap pass to win his heat race and to earn the pole for the 53-lap race. Ricky Weiss kept close tabs on the leader during a caution-filled first half of the race. Jimmy Owens made it a three-car chase for the lead. McDowell was too strong and eventually pulling away from Weiss and Owens to take the win. But vertue of his 3rd place finish, Owens wrapped up the Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals champion.
Other winners on Sunday were Odie Overholt, John Stevens, and James Collett Jr.
